April Fly Fishing Report

To all who've recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!

Spring is here, and the weather has been great to get outdoors. This is the time of the year when we turn our focus to the warm water species on the various Hill Country rivers. The trout fishing is still good on the Guadalupe, and best fished before 11am or after 4pm.

This is the latest we've seen the Redhorse Sucker lay their eggs. The winter freeze in February played a big role in the delay. The trout are super charged, and seeking out the eggs. There have also been a number of successful anglers using dry flies. The crowds on the Guadalupe have greatly reduced with the trout moving to new spaces and the various other species to target elsewhere.

We've added a new boat to the fleet that provides more room and comfort for our bass and trout trips. Check out the photos on Facebook or Instagram of our new Boulder Boatworks drift boat. April is a great time to book a trip to experience some epic fly fishing. Check out http://actionangler.net/ to book a trip, buy some gear or gift certificate, or get up to speed on the latest river info. (All of our guides have been vaccinated for COVID-19)

RIVER CONDITIONS

The flows on the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake are 62 CFS. We are recommending half day float trips because of the lack of water, and the Covid risk with food preparation on full days. The Canyon Lake level is over 5 feet feet low and flows could reduce more if rainfall doesn't increase. It's very important to keep a watch on the river flows. Wading can become dangerous if you are on the river when the dam suddenly increases its flow. We recommend visiting http://www.grtu.org/flow/ to stay informed of the lake level and dam release. Make sure to book a trip soon to secure your date.

FLY SHOP and RIVER ACCESS

The Action Angler fly shop is fully stocked with everything you need to have a successful day on the river. River access is $10 per angler and only available to fly anglers. Masks will be required to enter the fly shop, and the number of customers are limited to 4 at a time. The door to the shop will likely be locked in order to control the traffic inside the shop. We have a vending machine on the front porch with snacks and drinks (cash only). Purchases can be made through our website at any time of the year.

I'd like to fill you in on the most recent news in the Texas Hill Country and west/central Colorado.
